Varieties

15 varieties are currently grown at Pulford's Appletree Orchard.  The 15 varieties grown are:

 

Red Delicious - a traditional red apple best for eating straight off of the tree. Available late September through late October.*

 


Winesap - a red, firm apple best eaten sliced with cheese, or included in an applesauce.  Available mid October through early November.*

 


Rome Beauty - a large, deep red apple most commonly eaten when baked and dressed with butter, brown sugar and raisins.  Available mid October through early November.*

 

Melrose - a large apple with a reddish - orange skin.  This apple is wonderful for eating straight off of the tree.  The Melrose is a very crisp and juicy apple that has an inviting sweet-tart flavor.  Available late September through mid October.*

 

Empire - a McIntosh-Red Delicious cross that is great for eating, or making pies or sauce.  Available mid September through late October.*

 

Jonagold - a large green apple with a red blush.  The jonagold is a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Jonathan.  This apple is great for eating off the tree or used in pies or sauce.  Available early September through late September.*

 

Fuji - this apple is a known for its sweet, crisp and juicy flavor.  The Fuji is wonderful for eating, used in pies, or combined with a slightly more tart apple in a sauce.  Available mid October through early November.*

 

Gala - the Gala is a summer apple that is generally harvested in early to mid August.  The Gala is a sweet, crisp apple and makes the perfect addition to a packed lunch.  Available mid August through early September.*

 

Golden Delicious - a traditional golden-yellow color that is superb for eating or used in pies and/or sauce.  Available mid September through late October.*

 

Mutsu - a large green apple boasting a reddish blush.  The Mutsu is a crisp and juicy apple that is good for eating out of hand or in pies and sauce.  Available late September through mid October.*

 

Granny Smith - a crisp, juicy and sweet-tart apple that is most commonly used in pies, but is also good for eating out of hand.  Available late September through mid October.* 

 

Jonathan - a sweet-tart and juicy red apple that is most commonly used in pies and sauce.  The Jonathan is also great out of hand or sliced and mixed with a bowl of fresh greens.  Available early September through late September.*

 

Spur Gold Blush - this apple is a hybrid of the golden delicious.  It is excellent for eating and also makes a tasty sauce.  Available mid October through early November.*

 

Braeburn - the Braeburn is a sweet, firm, crisp and juicy apple.  It is excellent for eating out of hand and also makes a delicious pie or apple crisp.  Available mid October through early November.* 

 

Lady Apple - The lady apple is a green apple that boasts a red blush.  It grows no larger than a golf ball and is generally used for decorative purposes; however, occasionally it is used in making apple butter.  Available early October through late October.*
